FYFB Sets the Pace

Food Bank recognizes and thanks supporters

FYFB crossed the finish line as a big winner at this year's Scotiabank Toronto thanks to the "marathon" efforts of many. FYFB Runners raised more than $4,500-nearly double the amount raised last year.

"Everyone on the FYFB team did a great job, but this year there were two stand-out fundraisers," said Ingrid Sapona, FYFB Runners Team Captain. "Sandy Kemsley walked the 5k for us and she raised $1,850 - that's $370 per kilometre. Amazing! The other hero was Peter Donato, - owner of MyNextRace.com - who raised more than $1,400 for us. In addition, Peter was featured in the CBC Sports' coverage of the event."

As part of the Oasis Neighborhood Challenge, FYFB had a booth at the two-day Wellness Expo at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre the Friday and Saturday before the race. For the second year in a row, articling students from Cassels Brock, one of Bay Street's top law firms, helped man FYFB's Expo booth.

"Cassels Brock has been great - very supportive of our efforts. Without their help, it would have been nearly impossible for us to have the booth at the Expo," said Sapona.

The Neighborhood Challenge involves hosting a cheering section on race day. For the second year in a row, FYFB's cheering section was at Inukshuk Park. Though getting down to the cheering section is a bit tricky on race morning, everyone had a great time. It was a gorgeous day and our band - The Lost Americas - played rock and roll non-stop for three hours. They kept the runners pumped and the cheerers dancing.

Keep running and see you next year!

About the Fort York Food Bank

FYFB is a multi-service agency focused on reconnecting people with our community. We do this by working with partners who share our vision to: feed the hungry by providing the basic nutritional requirements to individuals and families in need; and, help people get on track by providing counselling, training and advocacy to help people find jobs, safe housing and appropriate social/community programs.

FYFB was founded in February 1998 as an independent agency of the Daily Bread Food Bank Foundation of Toronto. FYFB is a registered charitable organization -- number 867147464 RR0001. FYFB is governed and managed by a voluntary Board of Directors who are elected by our membership at our AGM.

FYFB originally focused on providing emergency food supplies, but to meet the economic and social needs of the most vulnerable people within our community and resolve our clients' underlying issues, FYFB's programming has grown to an integrated set of services to prevent homelessness, eliminate hunger and provide a safe environment for connecting with our community.
